How to do it
5 stepsStand upright facing a low platform or a flat bench. Choose a height where your knee bends to about 90 degrees when your foot is on top.
Place your right foot fully on the platform. Exhale and step up by pushing through that foot, bringing your other leg up beside it.
Stand tall at the top without leaning back.
Inhale and step back down slowly with your left foot, then return the right foot to the floor.
Complete the planned reps with the right leg, then repeat on the left, or alternate legs each rep.
Let the working leg do the lifting. Pushing off the back foot turns the step-up into a jump and takes work away from the thigh and glute.
It is a good option if straight-leg deadlifts bother your lower back. To make it harder, hold dumbbells or use a higher step.
